Tank storage - USB
« on: March 18, 2020, 07:27:22 AM »

Quick question. If you leave a cell phone connected to the USB plug, will it keep charging while the bike is parked and completely powered off?

No. It would drain the very small 12V battery

The USB port does remain on when charging though!

And it is powered from the dcdc converter, not from the 12v battery :)

Even the Aux 12v socket are powered when charging, always nice to have your heated jacket powered while waiting for a charge 😁

I meant, do the USB sockets stay powered when the bike is completely off, and not even charging. Just parked.

If the bike is completely off, I expect they're off.

Which bike? My SR and DS shuts down the DC to DC converter so there is no power anywhere for 12 or USB power.

But what you can do is buy one of these thingies to charge with 12 VDC or even 5VDC USB input  that has USB power output that will stay on even when there is no power on the bike.

I think the SR/F has a 12V battery (doesn't it?). If that is the case, buy one of these and connect it  to your 12 volt battery direct. Current  drain should be so low enough to be considered negligible, especially when not loaded with a USB item. Or you could add a switch to it. You may need an adapter to power your item or such a unit with a different output.

Another option is to add  one of these.

BTW, in the SR/F what is the specs of the 12V battery? AH rating, etc? What size is it?

I've found charging off my accessory battery in my car to be bad.  Which is why I have a low-voltage cut off on it now.

SR/F owners manual states not to power anything off the 12 volt battery , it is use to power certain systems like ABS.

I seriously doubt that it cannot handle a few more mills for a USB. If it cannot handle that, I would consider it a rather serious design flaw. But I wouldn't want to add much more than that.

They is a lot of things they say in manuals to be on the safe side from those who do not know what they are doing. For an example, my RV, which is a Class C, (made from a Chevy Express Van Cutaway) says do not add anything  to the vacuum line. My RV came with no cruise control. I added one to the vacuum line ten years ago. No issues at all and it works perfectly.

BTW, what size is that SR/F battery?

It's not the few milliamps, it's the amphours leaving something charging on it.

not sure about the accessories you mentioned, since the SRF already has 2 USB inside that storage box?! Why connect this?

So it can stay on when the bike is off. The two in the storage box are useless if you want to charge with the key in your pocket away from the bike when not charging the bike.
