2019 DS 14.4 questions
« on: April 08, 2020, 05:03:42 AM »

Hello all, been out of the game for a bit, actually, never owned a Zero but did have the Alta Redshift SM.  I've found a new leftover 19' DS 14.4 pretty close to where I live for $14,000 otd, pretty sure I could get it for less, I'm thinking $13.5k total price.  I've only ridden the FXS and DSR, both 2016 models.  I'm afraid coming off of the violent Alta and past experience with the FXS and DSR that the DS 14.4 will be a turd, excuse the expression.  What I'm looking for is zippy performance with decent range, I don't feel like a FX/S will give me the range I'm looking for (50-70 miles blended conservative'ish riding) so I'm leaning towards larger capacity bikes.  I'll be financing the bike so I'm wondering if I should spend the extra 3 grand and go with a new DSR?  Sorry for such a long post:(

I know a guy selling a '17 DSR for $11k and about 4k miles on it. Maybe fewer. Would you like me to get him in touch with you?

edit- I believe you will want the R. It's much more fun.

When I purchased my DSR 4 months ago I had no doubt... once you spend 15k+, just spend 18k (here in Europe it is more expensive) and go for the top :D

You can always get more less the same range in eco mode when needed :D, but this is just my 2 cents, if you are in your credit limit, go for the DS.

Thank you for the replies!!  I believe I'll take your advice, I'll be going for the DSR, I'm sure the DS is a fine cycle but for $60 more monthly payment, I'd have the extra squirt of the DSR, I think it's worth that.  Thanks again, I'll be sure to post up when I have one in my possession.  Thanks again!

It is also possible that the DSR will hold its value better than the DR when it comes to reselling it.

I have a 2019 14.4 DS, and it's got plenty of acceleration for me. There was a 2020 DSR at the dealer, too, but I opted to save the cash. No regrets. I may get the tank charger one of these days.

My DS has more acceleration than my SR when in the eco mode. However, vice versa  in the sport mode.

I'm still here and trying to figure out what I'm going to do, I'm leaning towards the 2020 DSR but I'm a mail carrier for the USPS and working 6 days a week, packages are worse than Christmas right now, sooo, I'm trying to figure out logistically how to go pick the bike up, it's around 3 hrs away so not a terrible day trip.  Thanks for the additional info!!

Thanks for working so hard!

That is a tough thing to schedule.  Could you get it delivered?

Welcome, it's a challenging job right now but I love my folks on my route, lots of elderly (my father included) depend on me for medicine thru the mail, so it's a good thing I suppose.

I might be able to get it delivered but I'm pretty uptight about condition and such so I would have to see it in the flesh first, I'm old fashioned I guess, it'd be an 8 hour turn around so not bad, I'll just have to get my boss in a headlock and take a day off work.

Based upon the mail carriers that I see delivering my mail, I have no doubt that you are really working hard.  I sometimes see them delivering packages on Sunday's. Things have sure changed since I was a mail carrier during the early 1960's while working my way through college. In those days, you only carried letters, there was very little junk mail and each home usually received about two or three pieces of mail a day.  Work started at 6am, when you sorted letters into address slots, before sending them out to be placed in green mail boxes along your route for storage until you ran out of mail and needed the next load along your route.  A typical route was 300 homes and I could usually complete my route by 1pm, go home for lunch and return back to the PO in time to punch the time clock at 3.  And of course we were full government employees.

The only time I got in trouble was when the Postmaster caught me carrying my mail on the floorboard of my motor scooter and told me never to do that again.  ;)

I hope you can get a break for a day sometime so that you can pick up the DSR that you want. I am sure it will be time well worth spent.  :)

Yeah, the Post Office is a tough boss.  Tho that's because Congress is a tough boss!  The route to being an actual route carrier is not for the faint of heart... They work their trainees and contract workers really hard before making them permanent.  Which is probably not very healthy.

If you haven't made the purchase yet, you MIGHT look at having the Controller on the DS upgraded to one from the SR/DSR.
You would save money on the purchase and possibly on the Insurance as well since it isn't a " Race Bike "

I'm not sure that would be such a good idea when the regular DS doesn't have the R motor, which according to the unofficial manual means it would have high temperature magnets.
