Electricity Consumption and real world range SR 13.0 ?
« on: May 25, 2020, 12:01:58 AM »

Hi all,

I recently got a 2017 SR 13.0 with low mileage on it and am quite happy with the bike.
However, what surprises me is the electricity consumption.

I took a ride yesterday of 2x 52 miles all country roads (80%) and towns (20%), there and back with a full charge in between (stock charger).
On the trip "there", keeping my speed around 50 mph without overtaking anybody, I arrived with a 50% SoC and then charged the bike over the day. I had a tail wind of about 10 mph most of the trip.

On the trip "back", I kept it around 60 mph and made it home with 29% SoC and a projected range left of 13 miles. The wind in the meantime had died down after a system of fronts had passed.
Charging the bike overnight, plugged into a watmeter, showed a total consumption 9 kwhs, including losses in the charging process.
Thus at regular speeds for Germany, the bike would provide me with a range of less than 60 miles.

In your expericend, are these realistic figures or should I worry about my battery?
So far, I have not experienced limp mode and the cell balance while charged shows around 2 mv, at 30 Soc the app showed around 10 mv.

I would really appreciate y'alls feedback.
Thanks and best greetings from Germany

Sounds about right.  You can squeeze out 92 miles if you get a large windscreen and only ride around in eco mode.

Drain the battery to 0% (until the power meter starts to flash) and then load up to 100%
I do this once a year, see my data from recent years
Unfortunately, I did not do this the first year.
The last time I put it on a jack and drove it even further, I stopped after 10km.

Think that after 63,000 km I now lost 5% of my battery, very neat.

I have a 2015 SR with a 13KwH battery and I get around 120-130 km (75-80 miles) range on the highway (@ ~100km/h (63m/h)).

When I get head wind, then the range goes down significantly.

Headwind response can be mitigated by a larger windscreen or a fairing. Electric motorcycles without a windscreen or fairing take a big performance hit at highway speeds, because of drag, so much so that efficiency studies are best normalized to airspeed, not groundspeed.

Thanks Burpman, will try the next chance I get and then check the results.

Thanks for the stats. Did they make changes to the motor in 2016 to make it more efficient? I have a 16 DS with 13KwH but the bike has 18k miles on it.

They switched to the IPM motor in 2016/2017, which particular models have it is detailed in the unofficial manual.

Hello i am new in this forum and i ride an sr 13kwh 2017
When compairing ranges ,it is impotant to mention the temperatures you where riding in.
I tested my bike at 12°C on the highway in eco  113 km/h and could make 155 km
A week later it was 25°C and i could make 185 km.
This is a significant difference in range for only 13°C difference in temperature.
It is also important how good your aerodynamics are,do you sit upright ,do you have a topcase or not ,maybe you have a windshield.
I have an aerodynamic fairing that i was testing, thats why i can make so many km on the highway.

Hey Gains, thanks for the info with the fairing, your range had me worried there for a moment. Since starting the thread, I have added a windshield which seems to improve range at 80 kph plus. So far I tried relaxed riding for a whole charge, 55 kph in cities, 80 kph cross cuntry. I made it 120 km down to 30% SOC with a shown range of 50 km left. Temp was around 20^C, wind abouth 8 kts. Bike took 8.9 kwh from the wall to recharge, including charging losses.

Don t worry ,be happy Kappi.

If there is something wrong with the battery ,the BMS gives you a fault code before you can notice it yourself. Your dealer can do a readout of the history of your battery and than you can see everything that has gone right and wrong.

Finally I managed a full charge cycle. I rode the bike down to 0% SoC and 6 km range left and then charged it over night with the on-board charger from a 240V outlet. The bike pulled 11.57 kw from the wall (kill-a-watt figure) which leaves a capacity of 10.6 kwh at 92% charging efficiency.
So, how is my pack doing?

Nominal capacity is 11.43kW/h so it would seem like you're down to about 93%, assuming your bike was actually completely down to 0% (95.2v).

Well, unfortunately I didn't measure the voltage. Might have to redo it. On the plus side, the bike would still accelerate past 100 kph at 5% SoC (so severe turtle mode).
