Please talk me out of it!
« on: October 31, 2020, 09:50:59 AM »

Today, I rode my Zero SR to Oak Grove Power Sports  (the new larger shop).

I was tempted to buy my 11th motorcycle. A new  2020 Zero SR/S Premium with luggage and center stand. For 23K$.

No sales guy would even come to me after staring at the bike for about an hour total several different times. So I ended up just leaving. It looks like the motorcycle sales guys are no longer paid by commission!  Or perhaps it was too late on a Friday afternoon to start a new sale!

But I really don't need 11 motorcycles.  I do not want to deal with an extra one. My 8 garages are quite full as it is.  And I really don't have anything I want to trade in. And  with the two chargers I carry, I can charge my old bike even faster, at 8KW instead of 6.3 KW. But with that new bike, I would not have to carry anything and then I can actually use my luggage space. But still very tempted. But perhaps I already talked myself out of it!

In other news . . . .

From there, I went to the Wal*Mart in Oak Grove with my total of  ~8 KW worth chargers.   The charge station panel  says it can only do 32 amps (7,680 watts), But right on the screen it said I was charging at 7.7 KW, and no issue, so I charged for 30 minutes and raced back to Auburn on the freeway.

So far, not once have I had to use that switch to remove the OBC to reduce the charge rate to 6.6 KW. Since I added the switch, I could either get near the full 8 KW from every charge station or else hog up two ports from the Charge Points that can only do 6.6 kw per port.

What do you have to lose? If I had space for more then my 3 I'd probably get an SR/[SF] and/or an Eva Ribelle.

Yeah, when I cannot decide between two bikes, I buy both.

I could also end up with a Ribelle, then have 12 bikes.

I am not sure if this disease ever ends.

But there is a  simple formula for how many bikes we should own. The formula  is "N+1" , where "N" is the number of bikes we currently own.

Augh x-x

That would take up my life savings.

Not that I wouldn't enjoy a bike I could ride to the city ^-^;  Not that I can ride to the city right now.

With your 8.5KWH, all you really need is around 6.3 KW of chargers and you will be able to go almost anywhere, if there are J change stns around.

Larger batteries do not save much  time- they take longer to charge to  full. Very near the same gain per minute at the same charge rate.

You should be able to go around 85 miles slow (below 45 MPH)  before needing a charge.  Or about half that distance if on the freeway.   Even 42 miles is longer than it seems when you're doing it.

A little less, because you don't want to get down to 0  SOC.

Don I want your problems.     ;)

I really like most of the whole SRS bike but I think they made a few mistakes or just fell short on a few features that keep me from pulling the trigger myself.

The charge debate of faster but more rare (and costlier) CCS charging vs slower but more available and sometimes free level two charging aside I think the SRS messed up charging in two ways.

First the lack of the Anderson connection for off bike chargers that could also be used to power other things was a head scratcher other than forcing people to buy a new on-board charger only.

The second is the lack of two J1772 plug points if a bike also has the charge tank.  That gives a person in the US a better chance of getting the full 12kW of charging speed that the bike can handle.  Again, other than a little savings from using another inlet there is no good reason to not do it.

The biggest disappointment though is the lack of a 20kWh battery pack to go with all this aero "touring-ish" style bike with faster charging.

Don, just like the rest of us your not getting any younger.  If you feel you really want it, get it.
I think if you look back at your last 100 rides, how many were on a gas bike?
I'd let the one that you ride the least or love the least go to someone who will ride it and get what you want.

P.S. I may be PMing you about your new charger setup.

I have a friend with 24 ICE motorcycles, a sail boat and an airplane. He stores some of his motorcycles in his home garage, in his airplane hanger and the rest in a small workshop that he rents. Who needs a paying job to keep you busy?   ::)

I find most J1772 charging to be free, with the places that "charge to charge" the exception. Especially true in the Reno area.

Those  that cost are usually in the tourist trap areas, such  as Truckee, CA or a busy mall , service station or whatever.  And even then, J1772 is usually cheap and sometimes a flat $2.00 for all day, such as the J1772  J-Stn behind the Chevron  gas station at Cisco Grove, CA.

IMO, the only way you're going to find a perfect  electric motorcycle  (or even ICE) is to design it yourself, or modify it to what you want where possible.

CCS charging is picking up very fast in some areas, such as I-80 in CA. Both are a lot better than just a year ago, until getting far way away from everything, then not a lot has improved.

I would think even on the SR/S you could wire your own chargers to the motor controller. The same chargers I use I would think would work there as well. No need for the Anderson. The way I did it is cheaper per KW of charging by quite a bit. But this  will only charge to 95% SOC, but from there, the stock stuff can take over. And you could wire the extra external charges  to a  new  J-connector.  The problem there is you have to carry the extra chargers for the road, like I do.

I really enjoy all my bikes about equally. And some of them are not worth much for a trade-in.

As for how I did my charger setup, please consider doing it by posting a message  in the hack section. That way,  others can see it and consider if they wish to do the same. But if you have a reason to prefer it in a PM, that is fine also.

Yeah it's a whole different charging world here in GA.  Even the few level 2 chargers at work bill you at .75 an hour which sucks with a 1.3kW charger.  I don't need it but it would be nice to use it ad go home faster.
Most are at hotels that only let you charge if your a guest or car dealers that don't want to be bothered.

As for your setup, I've followed along with the new units you got from Elcon that let you charge to 95%, even if I have commented on those threads.  I've seen your posts on the switch you have setup and that may be more than I want to do.
Basically if the folks at Elcon have a plug and play unit that I can setup to pull from a dryer outlet adapter that isn't too costly I'm interested.

So where are you leaning when it comes to getting the bike?

The chargers only cost me around $700.00 each. You will also need a hydraulic crimping tool to make your own small Anderson connectors.

The one in the link works surprisingly well.

Each of these chargers are 3.3 KW if used with 240 VAC. Yes, they will work with a drier outlet, but you will have to change the AC plug. But ask Elcon if they have adapter because the AC plug on these are on a disconnect plug that can easily be changed. These chargers will also work at around  half power if used at 120 VAC.

If you're going to use two of them, they needed to be started at around the same time. The voltage between them have to be close together to start. A couple of minutes difference is okay and I never had an issue with such, but that is what Elcon told me.

HHmmm.  I thought it was a bit cheaper than that, and ready to go.
Does it have a male C13 AC plug like the Delta Qs?
