2011 DS 4.4 KW battery problem
« on: August 05, 2014, 08:56:21 AM »

I just picked up a 2011 DS with a drained battery. I know the BMS and the charger will not allow the battery to charge because it is out of balance. Has anyone ever been able to charge these cell separately back to a balanced state. I have charger for my RC li-ion batteries and could set it to charge one or a few cell with a balancer.

If you have some suggestion please pm or post me.

Thanks In advance

Ok since no input yet... I have gone a head and disassemble to get access. Now that i have gained access to the BMS connector and have fabricated a connector to connect a power supply to these individual parallel connected cells. I will charge all cells till they reach 3V. then i will install my blinky cell balance and let it sort out cell balance. Once I have established a balanced state I will reconnect to the Delta Q and recharge the battery.

Anyway this is the plane. What do you think.

I'm sure I've seen a post from Dr Bass on this.  Using an rc charger to sort individual cells.  I'm no expert, so have a dig around to find it..:-)

I'm sure did too. That where i got the idea to charge at the balance plug to balance the cells indviualy. I will post the details later.

Cell are coming up nicely just using constant current now with all cell connected to same power supply in parallel circuit. Once i have reached 3V balanced I will reconnect the BMS and charge with the Delta Q

I see you care charging them thru the BMS connector witch probably mean that you charge at very low rate witch is the best for cell overdischarged.

The LiMn are good for recovering. if you see that the voltage raise it mean they will recover. but if the seem to stock at a given low voltage there is nothing you can do for these.

Even if you can't use that battery anymore You can replace these with a 16s LiFepo4 cells but you will need to simulate the 14s cells string to let the BMS to still detect 14s. The best way is to use a resistor voltage divider made with 14 resistors. the Thundersky style cells can do a great job for a 2011- Zero.

I have couples spare Zero LiMn cells in great shape if you a re interested in.

Hi Doc

LOL I figured you had a solution/replacement. I will let you know how it goes.

At this point I have slowly charge and balance all cells at 3.2V i will be connecting the BMS and then charge with the Delta Q tomorrow.

Thanks Jerry

Ok once I returned the cells to a stable 3.2V balance them manualy with my 0 to 30 V power supply. Then I connecteds the BMS back up and hit the charge to it with the Delta Q. Now it is taking a charge for over 2 hr. I should be more than 4 hr to charge full battery. That is if she hasn't lost to much capacity.

Cheers Jerry
