Zeros to tour the Alps
« on: November 02, 2013, 09:03:42 PM »

A news item at the bottom of page 7 in the November issue of Motorcycle Consumer News reports that Edelweiss Bike Travel is introducing their "Zero Emission Alpine Backroads Tour for 2014".  This famous and well established motorcycle tour company will be conducting a new motorcycle tour of the Alps using the latest range of Zero Electric Motorcycles.  The 700-1000 mile tours consist of some of the most famous roads in Europe, with prices starting at $3,230.  According to Rainer Buck, CEO of Edelweiss Bike Travel, the tour was born out of a desire to prove that electric motorcycle are ready for the real world.

Mr. Buck is quoted as saying: "In May 2013, our annual office and tour guide ride was scheduled.  You cannot even imagine the facial expressions of our established tour guides as they stood in awe of the brand new Zero.  Incredulous, skeptical, but - thank God - also curious. For three days they rode the Zeros over the passes of the Alps and the Dolomites, solo and with a passenger, in Sport and in Eco mode, in sunshine and in rain.  It works and how!  The decision was made; we had to do an Alps electric tour."    :D

Which models are going to take part to the tour?

The article didn't say.  But my guess is that they will be using the 2014 S next year, unless they are going to give the 2013 models another try, which is apparently what they did for the test run.  Likely it will depend upon where they are getting their bikes from and if they bought them or leased them this year.  If they own them outright, they might use the 2013 bikes next year until the 2014 models become available in Europe.  If you want to know for sure email Edelweiss.  No doubt they will be glad to tell you all about their upcoming electric motorcycle tours.   :)

Here is another article regarding the Edelweiss Alps tour on Zero motorcycles.  It shows the route, but the attached video is a generic promo for the company and does not mention electric motorcycles:

I put a deposit down for a 2015 trip. I have different plans for 2014.
